DEXA Bone Density Scan In Metro Atlanta
A painless, low-dose exam that measures bone mineral density and helps assess and detect osteopenia and osteoporosis — before a fracture happens.

What Is A DEXA Scan?
A DEXA bone density exam is a quick, painless test that measures the strength of your bones. It is the most widely used way to assess bone mineral density — the amount of calcium and other minerals packed into your bones.
Bone loss often happens silently, with no symptoms until a fracture occurs. A DEXA scan helps assess and detect osteopenia (early bone loss) and osteoporosis (more advanced bone loss) while there is still time to act, so you and your provider can make informed decisions about protecting your bone health.
The exam is non-invasive, uses a very low dose of radiation, and requires no injections, no contrast, and no special preparation. Most patients are in and out in about 15 minutes.
Who Should Get Screened?
Bone density testing is recommended for adults with risk factors for bone loss. You may benefit from a DEXA scan if any of the following apply to you:

DEXA Scan FAQ
Is A DEXA Scan Safe?+
Yes. A DEXA bone density exam uses a very low dose of radiation — a small fraction of a standard chest X-ray — and is considered safe for most adults. It is painless and non-invasive, with no injections or contrast.
How Long Does A DEXA Scan Take?+
Most DEXA exams take about 10 to 15 minutes. You simply lie still on the scanning table and breathe normally while the scan is completed.
Do I Need To Prepare For A DEXA Scan?+
No special preparation is needed. Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers, belts, or buttons near the hips and spine, and let our team know if you have recently had another imaging study.
When Will I Get My Results?+
A board-certified radiologist reviews every study. Reports are typically sent to your ordering provider within about 24 hours.
How Often Should I Repeat A Bone Density Test?+
That depends on your results and your risk factors. Many patients repeat the exam every one to two years, but your provider will recommend the interval that is right for you.
Do You Take Insurance For DEXA Scans?+
Yes. We accept most major insurance plans. Self-pay patients generally do not need a referral, while insurance plans may require a physician order. Call us before scheduling so we can confirm your requirements and provide an exact quote.
